I clean the theatre.

When I’d gone into Bleachy’s, I was still Edith Holler. When I came out, I was someone else altogether. And I could not yet tell who that was. This new person was obliged to stand beside the cleaners of the backstage. I thought they’d never allow it, they’d know me instantly as a fraud, but they permitted me noiselessly into their ranks, barely giving me a second look. I stood beside ruddy-faced women and their disheveled offspring. One girl smiled at me, and I clung to that smile like arms around me. These are my people now, I thought, and I am one of them.
